New techniques used in tummy tuck, scar healing

Because washboard abs and a flat stomach are the lofty goals of so many Americans, when gym memberships and diets don't work, some people may be inclined to look into tummy tuck surgery.

As Dr Matthew Shulman, a New York plastic surgeon, explained to MyFox New York, "If your skin has been stretched out because of multiple pregnancies or change in weight…you need to remove the [excess] skin.

But because some patients look to slim down their waistline, but are not ideal for the traditional tummy tuck surgery, Schulman developed a new procedure known as the Smooth Tuck.

The technique is suitable for patients who wish to get rid of their bulging bellies as well as their excess skin, the news source reports.

"Smooth Tuck allows me to do aggressive liposuction and then remove the skin that is hanging with one operation," Shulman commented.

The surgery takes place under general anesthesia, requires three to five days for recovery, and leaves a scar on the stomach.

Some plastic surgeons have begun using silicone gel sheeting to reduce the appearance of tummy tuck scars after surgery.
