The two kinds of materials used to close a c-section wound are staples and subcuticular sutures. In the randomized study, 123 women were assigned one of the two choices, and their scars were examined two and six months later to see if there was a difference - there was not.
"The results reported herein show that in women undergoing cesarean delivery there are no long-term differences in cosmetic outcomes between stapled wounds and those closed with subcuticular sutures using different materials," one of the authors of the study, Dr Antonella Cromi, wrote.
Researchers say that the decision regarding which method to choose when closing the c-section wound should be based on what is more comfortable for the patient, and if the surgeon may encounter time restraints.
Women who have delivered a child via c-section may notice the scar in varying degrees but, due to recent advancements in scar treatment, they may be able to mask the mark.
Silicone ointments and gel sheeting may assist in reducing the appearance of a c-section scar, or other marks that are the result of a surgical procedure.
