Dealing with a facial or neck scar can be difficult for anyone, yet a new medical procedure that leaves shorter scars for thyroid patients may make scar treatment much easier for patients going under the knife.

A new study performed by researchers at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, is claiming that use of video-assisted parathyroidectomy (VAP) can actually result in significantly smaller scars than more traditional procedures like bilateral cervical exploration (BCE).

Researchers observed 46 patients undergoing both VAP and BCE operations for primary hyperparathyroidism to assess the scar outcome of each procedure. They found that the average scar length of BCE patients was 4.3 centimeters long, while patients using the VAP method averaged 1.7 centimeter scars.

"In our series, both patient and observer analysis determined that, in general, the scar outcome in the VAP group was better than that in the BCE group," wrote Paula Casserly, the study's lead researcher. "Among the proposed advantages of VAP is a better aesthetic result as, intuitively, a smaller scar should be associated with a better cosmetic outcome."

Though the scar is smaller, patients undergoing a medical procedure may want to consider scar treatments like silicone ointments that reduce the appearance of scars before agreeing to undergo surgery.
