Jury still out on laser lipo

Laser-assisted liposuction is the latest innovation in plastic surgery to be debated among the medical community.

According to new research presented at the annual convention of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, laser liposuction can achieve the "skin tightening" effect that regular liposuction cannot. The research kicked off a debate among plastic surgeons as to whether the procedure was truly more effective than regular liposuction, according to WebMD.

Lasers cause skin cells to contract, achieving the same effect as regular liposuction with quicker recovery time. But not all surgeons are convinced.

Opponents point to the fact that laser liposuction costs more and can leave burns as a side effect. Burns are unsightly and can lead to permanent scarring.

Whether a patient decides to go the laser route or the traditional one, the scars and burns left by either can be significantly reduced through the purchase and use of silicone ointments and gels.
