As a large amount of Americans opt to go under the knife, the focus of the industry has shifted to developing liposuction and tummy tuck procedures that minimize the appearance of scars.
A new, less-invasive weight loss procedure has been effectively used at the University of California at San Diego to shrink the stomach without leaving a surgical scar, ABC affiliate WNCF reports.
"This surgery can be done completely endoscopically," Dr Garth Jacobsen, assistant professor at the surgery division at UC San Diego, told the news source. He explained that endoscopically means "down the mouth without any incisions at all."
The procedure has been successful in controlling the weight of patients who need to lose about 30 to 50 pounds and have a history of being overweight or obese.
However, traditional liposuction remains one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed today.
Patients who wish to minimize the appearance of topical liposuction scars may use silicone gel sheeting, which is applied to the skin for several weeks after the surgical procedure.
